One a penny, two a penny,
Hot cross buns!

For a few years now the Supermarkets have been bringing out new flavours of Hot cross buns. Gone are the days of just a regular fruited one. I tried quite a few last year but this year tried much more. Some Supermarkets have gone all out with multiple offerings, whilst others have just got a few. Their are some more i did try not pictured also. For the 2nd year in a row i still have not got my hands on the Rhubarb & Custard ones from Aldi, maybe next year!

I can remember when we visited my Nan & Grandad in West London on a Saturday, when i was younger and Nan would do us all a Buttered Hot Cross Bun with a Cup of Tea.

Of course some flavours might not return next year and the favourites will. So here we go with the review for 2020/21

With deals and offers and especially yellow stickers in M&S, got to try them for less and have a freezer full of different ones for later consumption. They do freeze well for short times, otherwise they can go soggy when defrosted or hard as a rock.

Marks & Spencer lead the way with varieties
  • Vegan Plant Kitchen- these just taste like Regular Buns great for those are avoid Dairy ETC
  • Marmite & Cheese – I know people love or hate them and some traditionalists say they are an abomination lol. I liked them very Savoury flavour great toasted with extra Cheese
  • Extremeley Chocolatey- As it says a very nice Chocolate Hot cross Bun with Chocolate chunks
  • Bramley Apple – Apple & Cinnamon classic combo
  • Blueberry – these were nice and fruity and a nice flavour
  • Chilli & Cheese -These were the 1st savoury flavour out and some traditionalists say they were an abomination when they 1st launched lol Again nice savoury flavour Aldi have since copied them with their own version
  • Chocolate Orange – 2017 a bit meh not sure about the Spice included
  • Sweet Orange Marmalade – 2019? an Orangey Bun
Sainsburys

Sainsburys brought out a few new flavours this year as well as some returning ones.

  • Strawberries & Cream – these were really nice, strong Vanilla cream like taste with Strawberry pieces.
  • Cranberry, Blueberries, Lingonberries – a twist on the classic
  • Apple & Cinnamon – a lot of places have this staple flavour now reworded each time to sound different.
  • Chocolate & Salted Caramel – These were my faves from Sainsburys great for a non Raisin/sultana liker
ASDA

Asda are lagging behind with the flavours

  • White Chocolate/ Salted Caramel – these were so disappointing and dry, if they had white Chocolate chunks as i had expected would vastly improve these.
  • Tomato & Red Leicester – Pizza like flavours which tasted great, different to the Chilli Cheese ones from M&S.
  • Apple/Cinnamon
Waitrose

Top marks also to Waitrose they always have several varieties to choose from including a new Heston flavour each year. Their are more flavours than my photo available

  • Ear Grey Mandarin Heston – 2 bigger more posher style Brioche Buns with a Orange and Bergamot Earl Grey vibe 2019/2020
  • Mocha Coffee Heston 2020 – These had a strong Coffee taste very adult taste with Dried Dates for some reason. Did not get Chocolate in it but did enjoy these.
  • Rum & Raisin- A strong Rum flavour in a traditional Hot Cross Bun
  • Chocolate & Cherry – These were a let down hardly any Cherries
  • Chocolate/orange –
  • Apple/Cinnamon –
  • St clements Orange & Lemon a nice twist
  • Toffee –
Aldi

Aldi entered into the Hot cross Bun flavours last year, with the Rhubarb Custard ones which i still have not got!

  • Honeycomb- had big hopes for this but was really just Chocolate & Toffee and a bit dry
  • Salted Caramel & Fudge – slightly different than the other Supermarkets with addition of Fudge, these were okay
  • Chilli Cheese a copy of the M&S flavour yet to try this one
  • Rhubarb/Custard – yet to get my hands on them! 2nd year now
  • Brioche style ?
Morrisons

Morrisons is way behind everyone else with little choice Got these Lemon Drizzle ones last year 2020

I did not try any different flavours From Tesco this year, but they did bring out a similar one to Sainsburys with Strawberries & Cream/White Chocolate
