I thought i would write a blog  about Mincemeat every year i always hear people saying they are mince pied out after having too many of them.

First of all The Minces is supposed to be Cockney Rhyming slang for Mince Pies = Eyes

people think all people from East London are Cockneys, which is not the case. Some still use the slang words and the language of Cockney rhyming slang but not me and my family.

Trying to teach my partner Cockney slang was funny as his American and he didn’t get it as i don’t also. We got a mini book of Cockney slang for him and watched him read it haha.

Well i am here to say that Mincemeat not only is great for Mince pies of course but many other festive baked treats. I avoid the boozy varieties  ones as they sometimes can be overwhelming and of course not suitable for those who cannot drink or consume alcohol.

With a range of Basic to luxury  Mincemeat’s on the supermarket shelf’s which one do you pick?. In all honestly i have had branded ones and the supermarket own label version. Both just as good as each other, for the real difference look at the labels and composition of fruits that is the real difference, but not much really. After Xmas i manage to get them sometimes for 10p a jar when supermarkets reduce them to shift stock with 2 year dates on them! so i always have an ample stock throughout the year and years.

NOW DEEP FILL OR SHALLOW?

I myself prefer my own homemade ones  as they are a good combo of pastry and filling. Some are all pastry no filling some are too much filling and little pastry.  I tried a M&S one once which was really bland Mr Kipling ones are okay. I did try Heston’s Mince pies with a Pine sugar dust a few years back  made with puff pastry. They were nice and the Pine sugar was a different addition which i intend to replicate  soon with my own Pine sugar.

I always like to switch it around with different cutters for the top part of the Mince pies every year to make them different and festive

I am on the hunt for 2 Mince pie boxes to try out  so will report on them once obtained.

If you think about Mincemeat it really is dried fruit and Suet and spices and a liquid sauce.

Old recipe books list an Souffle as a recipe and also an Mincemeat sweet Omelette EWWW!

don’t go attempting that one anytime soon.  Think about  the texture and flavour pairing sweet spicy with creamy and crunchy which works well with Cheesecakes, Pavlova, Meringues and Cakes
